Project Overview
A mother's determination became the beginning of a business
Some businesses begin with a market opportunity. Others begin when life demands that someone find a new way forward. For Mara, the decision to start a trucking company came during a defining moment for her family.
She was a stay-at-home mother of two when her husband, a professional welder, suffered a workplace accident that left him unable to continue working in his trade. Suddenly, the family needed a new source of financial support. Rather than allowing that unexpected change to determine her family's future, Mara made a courageous decision. Her husband would care for their children at home, and she would pursue a career that could provide for the household.
Mara had always loved trucks. As a child, she was fascinated by 18-wheelers and the idea of driving across the country. Although she had no previous trucking experience and limited traditional employment history, she saw commercial transportation as an industry she could enter by obtaining specialized training and the appropriate driver's license. She enrolled in trucking school and earned her Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
When she approached Stackwell Studios, she had already demonstrated her determination. But she had only two pieces of what would become her business: a company name and her CDL. Everything else still needed to be researched, organized, developed, registered, implemented, and connected.
Stackwell Studios became her business strategy, planning, implementation, project management, and technology development partner. Our engagement covered the complete business startup process from developing an independent motor carrier operation under its own federal authority to creating the custom technology needed to run the company.
"She didn't have the experience, the equipment, or the business infrastructure. What she had was the courage to start and a reason bigger than herself."
The Business Vision & Challenge
Building a company in an industry she was still learning
Earning a CDL allowed Mara to pursue commercial truck driving, but it did not automatically prepare her to establish and operate an independent trucking business. Operating an 18-wheeler as a business owner introduced responsibilities that went far beyond driving. Mara needed to understand federal motor carrier registration, independent operating authority, insurance, commercial vehicle registration, fuel-tax reporting, safety compliance, equipment acquisition, freight sourcing, customer agreements, accounting, and employee management.
She also needed the infrastructure to operate efficiently once the company began accepting freight. A trucking company cannot function effectively with only a business name, a truck, and a website. It needs coordinated administrative systems, reliable documentation, financial processes, operational procedures, and consistent management of regulatory deadlines.
Stackwell Studios approached Mara's project as a complete business build rather than a collection of unrelated services. We developed a phased implementation strategy that organized the requirements, identified dependencies, coordinated administrative tasks, and established the systems necessary for independent operation. The business also needed to support future growth.
Although Mara initially entered the industry as an individual entrepreneur, the infrastructure we developed eventually supported a team that included three employees.
Business Setup, Legal & Regulatory Compliance
Building the legal and administrative foundation for independent trucking operations
One of the most substantial portions of the engagement involved researching, preparing, and completing the administrative and regulatory requirements for a commercial trucking company. Mara Logistics was not simply operating under another trucking company's authority. It was established as an independent motor carrier operating under its own MC authority.
This required researching the distinctions between a CDL, a USDOT number, and federal motor carrier operating authority, then completing the appropriate business and transportation registration processes. Stackwell Studios helped Mara navigate the federal and state requirements, organize documentation, complete applications, coordinate with relevant organizations, and establish the recurring compliance processes needed for continued operations.
The project involved multiple regulatory authorities, each responsible for different aspects of commercial transportation.
Federal Motor Carrier Registration
We completed the research and application work associated with establishing the business under the applicable FMCSA registration framework. This included obtaining the company's USDOT identification and its independent MC operating authority. The USDOT number identified the company for federal commercial motor vehicle safety oversight. The MC authority established its authorization to conduct applicable for-hire interstate transportation under its own operating authority. The registration process also required coordination of associated insurance and process-agent requirements.
Commercial Insurance & Financial Responsibility
Commercial trucking insurance was another major area of the project. Stackwell Studios helped Mara research appropriate insurance requirements and worked directly with her and insurance representatives to coordinate coverage. This included participating in insurance-related telephone discussions and assisting with the information and documentation needed to move the process forward. Insurance was not treated as a stand-alone purchase. It was part of establishing a motor carrier operation that could satisfy applicable regulatory and operating requirements.
State Registrations & Transportation Taxes
In addition to federal authority, the business needed to address relevant Ohio registration and transportation tax requirements. We researched and coordinated the applicable commercial vehicle registration, apportioned registration, fuel-tax, and other state-level administrative requirements. This work contributed to the development of the custom IFTA tracking system and the broader compliance calendar.
Motor Carrier Safety & Ongoing Compliance
We also developed the processes and documentation needed to manage the ongoing responsibilities of an independent trucking business. These included driver qualifications, safety documentation, vehicle maintenance, driver records, applicable drug and alcohol testing requirements, and recurring administrative obligations. As regulations evolved, the operational framework was designed to help Mara track and maintain the appropriate information rather than depend on memory.
USDOT Number Registration
Completed the federal motor carrier safety identification process.
MC Operating Authority
Completed the process for establishing independent for-hire motor carrier authority.
Ohio Motor Carrier Requirements
Completed research and applicable state-level registration preparation.
This work established the independent legal and administrative foundation of Mara Logistics. Instead of relying on another motor carrier's operating authority, Mara was able to operate her company under its own MC authority.

Brand Identity & Digital Presence
Giving a new transportation company a professional identity
As an independent freight transportation business, Mara Logistics needed to establish credibility with prospective customers and business partners. Stackwell Studios developed the company's digital presence and the business communication infrastructure needed to support professional operations. The custom website presented Mara Logistics as a freight and logistics provider and introduced its transportation services.
The original website included information about Less-than-Truckload (LTL) and Full Truckload services, along with customer contact and freight quote request functionality. The website also provided a place for prospective employees to learn about the company. We secured and configured the business's domain and professional email infrastructure, creating a consistent point of contact for freight customers, business partners, and operational communications. The public website worked alongside the custom back-end management platform, connecting the company's digital presence with its internal workflow.

Policies, Procedures & Employees
Documenting how the business should run, not just how it should launch
A trucking company needs more than federal registrations and an operating truck. It also needs consistent procedures for daily operations, driver management, freight documentation, safety, insurance, vehicle maintenance, and financial administration. Stackwell Studios developed Mara Logistics' operational policies, procedures, and manuals to establish repeatable processes throughout the business.
These documents supported the company as it moved from startup activities into day-to-day operations. We documented administrative responsibilities, freight workflow management, driver procedures, safety-related requirements, and relevant employee processes. This work became increasingly important as Mara hired three employees.
Having documented procedures and a centralized software platform made it possible to distribute information and support consistent operations without relying entirely on verbal instructions.

Software & Technology
A custom trucking management system built around the business
One of the most significant components of the Mara Logistics project was the development of its custom back-end business software. We did not simply provide a website or recommend a collection of disconnected applications. Stackwell Studios developed a centralized software platform that allowed Mara to manage critical aspects of her trucking business from one administrative environment.
The system brought together freight booking, load coordination, dispatching, customer inquiries, invoicing, payments, employee activity, driver records, IFTA information, and regulatory reminders. This software was developed to support the real operating responsibilities of an independent motor carrier.
It was especially important because trucking businesses must manage information across different operational and regulatory areas. A load affects a driver assignment. A driver assignment affects route and mileage records. Those records affect fuel-tax reporting. Completed work affects invoicing, payment collection, and financial administration. Our goal was to help Mara manage these connected activities through a system designed around her business.

- Freight Booking & Load ManagementWe created tools that supported the organization and management of customer freight.
- Dispatch & Driver ManagementWe built functionality that allowed Mara and her employees to coordinate trucking work.
- Driver Logs & Hours-of-Service TrackingWe developed a driver log system inside the back-end application.
- IFTA Fuel Tax & Mileage TrackingWe created IFTA-related tracking functionality as part of the internal software platform.

The Outcome
An independent trucking business with the infrastructure to operate and grow
Mara began with a business name, a CDL, and an urgent reason to build something for her family. What she did not have was the knowledge, administrative infrastructure, equipment strategy, or technology needed to establish a complete trucking operation. Stackwell Studios helped bridge that gap.
Our work supported the formation and implementation of Mara Logistics as an independent motor carrier operating under its own MC authority. The business had the foundational planning, documentation, registrations, policies, and administrative processes needed to support freight transportation. The custom software added another layer of operational capability.
Mara could manage freight activity, customer inquiries, driver information, IFTA records, invoicing, payments, employee access, and compliance reminders through an integrated business environment. The company subsequently grew to include three employees, demonstrating the importance of the operational systems established during its development.

Project Conclusion
She started with courage. We helped build the business around it.
Mara's journey began during one of the most difficult transitions a family can face. When her husband's workplace injury changed their circumstances, she could have allowed fear, uncertainty, or her lack of industry experience to determine what happened next.
Instead, she chose to learn a new profession, earn her CDL, and pursue a business in an industry she had admired since childhood. But building an independent trucking company required far more than determination. It required business formation, financial planning, federal operating authority, regulatory applications, commercial insurance, equipment acquisition, driver safety procedures, operating manuals, freight management, customer billing, and ongoing compliance.
It also required software capable of bringing those responsibilities together in a way a new business owner could manage. Stackwell Studios helped Mara build each of those foundations. From the first business planning decisions to the completion of federal and state processes, from the custom website to the employee portal and trucking management software, the engagement represented a comprehensive business implementation project.
The result was an independent freight transportation company with the systems to support its operations and a team that eventually grew to include three employees. Mara's story demonstrates what becomes possible when a woman's determination is supported by the right business strategy, practical implementation, and technology.
You bring the idea. We build the door.
